A Brave ‘Lion’ & His ‘Cub’

I remember meeting this guy for the first time in 2004 when he was just 10 years old. Immediately I recognized the gentle inquisitive spirit – curious about the world, but watchful. Patient. When he’s ready to speak, he is bold and brave; very protective about what he cares deeply about. It’s no wonder that when he had a little one of his own, he felt drawn to the image of a Lion. ???? Little ‘Leo the lion’ [cub]. ???? Much like his Daddy, I imagine this little lion cub will have a brave heart as he grows up ❤️, gentle and inquisitive – curious about the world, but watchful. Patient. When he’s ready to speak, he will no doubt be bold and brave ????, very protective about what he cares deeply about.

My brave nephews, a brave lion and his cub????????, whom I love so much!???? I admire every brave roar they share with the world????. The world is a more beautiful and safe place with these watchful ‘lions’. ????????

My work is rooted in three commitments: honoring the experiences of indigenous communities and the history of the land we inhabit; creating safe space for children and women whose voices have been silenced; and recording the honest truth of lived experience-- both my own and that of those who came before me. I believe art has the power to tell stories that words alone cannot, and to preserve what must not be lost or forgotten. I believe that all that we know about ourselves is because Art has preserved those stories throughout history, outliving those who created it.

When you encounter my work, I hope you find yourself in it-- not as escape, but as recognition. I hope it reminds you that your feelings matter, that your story deserves to be held, and that compassion and truth are still worth carrying forward.
